We’ve all heard about Apple’s App Store – the section of the iTunes store where Developers (like myself) sell or distribute paid or free Apps for Apple’s Mobile Devices- the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Now a company has launched Bodega, The (unofficial) app store for Mac Applications. It is free for developers to distribute their applications and like the app store they can either make them paid for or free. There are various categories and also featured apps, as well as the facility to review applications you have downloaded. It really is a must have for any Mac software lover and I can really see this piece of software taking off and perhaps even making Mac development more popular just like the App Store did for iPhone developers.

Pre+iTunes Syncing-My thoughts

Well, I’m sure most of you if not all have heard the debate that is currently sparking all over the internet between Apple and Palm over Palm’s decision to add iTunes syncing, without any permission from Apple, to their Pre mobile device.

The syncing allows music and video from the iTunes library, which can be purchased on the iTunes Music Store. To allow the Pre to do this it has to identify itself as an iPod device to let iTunes recognise it.

Apple was not happy with Palm’s unauthorised use of their software, and in an update to iTunes (version 8.2.1) stopped syncing by changing the way Apple devices identify with iTunes.

Palm then had to advise users to use a different piece of syncing software, The Missing Sync, which does not specialise in media syncing like iTunes. Palm has also reported Apple to the USB Implementers Forum for their blocking of sync.

In my Opinion, I think that Palm is in the wrong as they did not get any permission from Apple, who have spent lots of time, money and effort creating iTunes- mainly funded by revenue from iPod and iPhone sales. I also think it was wrong of Palm to spoof device IDs and that if Palm wish to have media syncing then they should spend the time, money and effort to create their own piece of software just like Apple did with iTunes.
